The searing memory of its hot harsh acidic acetone profile and thin bourbon-like character still haunts me every time I look at a bottle of what is now great whiskey. The first sniff reveals a light and delicate mix of sweet mashed corn caramel honey vanilla citrus and a dark fruit I cant quite identify mixed-in with woody oak and minty rye. Reminiscent of a fine port wine this rare whiskey is best served neat of over ice.

On swirling it leaves a thicker coating on the glass and has more legs and heavier body than George T. In general I am not an Eagle Rare fan. Right from the start this whiskey shows itself as fresh balanced and restrained.

Finding a dusty old bottle of that to assess would make for an interesting exercise. Buffalo Trace is well-balanced with mint and oak undertones whereas Eagle Rare features some oaky flavors but is not as well balanced. This is a 10-year-old Buffalo Trace bottling that.
